A good SaaS product demo shows one task from start to finish, for someone who already understands the problem. Pick the task, script it in five parts, record a clean run, then add zooms, callouts and captions so it works with the sound off.
What a demo video is for
A demo answers "how does it work, and will it fit what I need?" It is for people who already know what your product does and are deciding whether to trust it. If visitors do not yet understand the idea, make an explainer first. For where each belongs in your funnel, see SaaS explainer vs product demo.
Pick one task and one viewer
A demo that shows everything shows nothing. Choose the single task a prospect most wants to see done, such as importing data or sending a first report, and the one person who will watch it. Write both in a sentence before you record anything.
Script it in five parts
Use the structure in product demo video script structure: the situation, the task, the steps, the result and the next step. Keep the narration to what the screen cannot say by itself.
Record a clean run
- Use a clean demo account with believable sample data, never real customer data.
- Close notifications and unrelated tabs, and set the browser window to a fixed size.
- Do the task once as a rehearsal, then record it slowly and calmly. Mistakes are easier to cut than to hide.
Polish it
Raw recordings show cursor wobble, loading screens and small text. Fix that in the edit: zoom into the part that matters, add short callouts and captions, remove waiting time and keep the pace steady. When a recording is not enough, UI animation can replace it, which keeps the interface sharp and on brand.
Demo types at a glance
| Type | Length | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Feature clip | 15 to 45 seconds | Release notes, social and email |
| Task walkthrough | 1 to 3 minutes | Pricing page and sales follow-ups |
| Onboarding step | 30 to 90 seconds, one task | In-app and help center |
| Full product tour | As long as it needs, with chapters | Sales calls and the resource library |
These are starting points. Keep each video to one workflow and test what your viewers actually finish.
Common mistakes
- Showing every feature instead of one task
- Narrating what is obvious on screen
- Leaving in loading time and typos
- No captions, so it fails with the sound off
- No next step at the end
Frequently asked questions
How long should a product demo be?
As long as one task needs. A feature clip can be under a minute, and a task walkthrough usually runs one to three minutes. Longer tours work better with chapters.
Should I use my real product or animation?
Use the real product when you want to prove it works. Use UI animation when the real interface is cluttered or still changing.
Do I need a voice-over?
Many demos use one. If you skip it, use large captions so the video still makes sense on mute.
Can you make one for my product?
Yes. See my pages on SaaS explainers and product demos and app UI animation.
