Product demo video script: a structure that works

Quick answer

A good product demo script has five parts: a hook, the problem, the product in action, the proof and one clear next step. Keep the whole thing near a minute.

A product demo video is not a feature tour. It shows one problem being solved. Use this structure and fill it with your own product.

The five parts

  1. Hook (3 to 5 seconds). Open with the problem or the result, not your logo. "Spend less time on X" works better than "Introducing Y".
  2. Problem (5 to 10 seconds). Describe the pain in the viewer's words. One sentence is enough.
  3. Product in action (20 to 40 seconds). Show the three steps that solve the problem. Keep each step on screen long enough to read.
  4. Proof (5 to 10 seconds). A number you can back up, a customer quote or a recognizable use case. If you don't have proof yet, skip it instead of inventing it.
  5. Next step (3 to 5 seconds). Tell the viewer exactly what to do: start free, book a demo or read the docs.

Writing tips

  • Write for the ear. Read the script aloud and cut anything you stumble on.
  • Aim for about 130 to 150 spoken words for a minute of voice-over.
  • Use the name of the product no more than two or three times.
  • Show, then say. When the screen already makes the point, the voice-over can be shorter.

What to prepare for the editor

Send the script, a screen recording of the real flow, brand colors and fonts, and any clips of customers or the team. If you want it animated, say which parts of the interface matter most.

Tip: record the screen at a high resolution and with a clean account. Test data that looks real makes the demo feel real.

Where this script goes

Use the finished video on your landing page, in onboarding emails and in short cut-downs for social. If you want help turning a script into a polished animation, see my SaaS explainer and product demo service.

A worked example of the five parts

Here is an invented example for a made-up scheduling app, to show the shape and not a real product.

  • Hook: "Stop losing hours to back-and-forth emails about meeting times."
  • Problem: "Finding a time that works for everyone usually takes five messages."
  • Product in action: "Open the app, share your link, and your guests pick a free slot. It lands on both calendars."
  • Proof: "Teams use it to cut scheduling emails." Only say this if you have real data to support it.
  • Next step: "Start free today."

That script is about 60 words. Add short pauses for the screen to change and it fills roughly 30 seconds.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Starting with the company story. Viewers care about their problem first.
  • Showing every feature. Pick the one workflow that sells the product.
  • Reading the screen aloud. The voice should explain why, while the screen shows what.
  • Fast clicking. Real users move slowly. Slow down the cursor so viewers can follow.
  • No call to action. Finish with one clear next step.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a product demo video be?

For a landing page or an email, 45 to 90 seconds is a comfortable range. Longer walkthroughs can work in documentation or onboarding, as long as each video covers one workflow.

Should I use voice-over or on-screen text?

Use both when you can. Voice-over carries the story and captions make the video work with the sound off.

Do I need animation, or are screen recordings enough?

A clean screen recording can work well. Animation helps when you want to highlight interface parts, add zooms or show a result the real product can't show yet.

Can you turn my script into a finished video?

Yes. See my SaaS explainer and product demo service or send me the script.
