Quick answer

An explainer video explains an idea or problem and why your product matters. A product demo shows the product working. Use an explainer to attract and a demo to convince.

People use the two terms interchangeably, but they do different jobs.

Explainer videos

An explainer introduces your idea. It usually runs 30 to 90 seconds and uses animation, graphics and voice-over. It answers "What is this and why should I care?" and often works before the viewer has seen the product. Best for: landing pages, ads, launches and new categories that need explaining.

Product demo videos

A demo shows the product in use. It is built from screen recordings, often with animated highlights and captions. It answers "How does it work?" and "Can it do what I need?" Best for: consideration pages, sales emails, onboarding and feature announcements.

A simple way to choose

  • If people don't understand what you do, make an explainer.
  • If people understand but doubt it will fit their workflow, make a demo.
  • If you need both, make a short explainer for the top of the page and a longer demo lower down.

Can one video do both?

Sometimes. A 60-second video can open with a quick problem and solution, then show the product for most of the time. That hybrid works well for early-stage products.

Length and style

Explainers stay short. Demos can run longer because the viewer has already decided to look closely, but keep each one focused on a single workflow.

A closer look at when each one wins

When an explainer is the better choice

  • You're launching something new and the category is unfamiliar.
  • Your visitors leave the page without scrolling.
  • You need one video to work across ads, the website and presentations.

When a demo is the better choice

  • Visitors understand the idea and want proof that it works.
  • Sales conversations stall on "how does it actually work?"
  • You release features often and need short walkthroughs.

How the two work together

A common pattern is a short explainer at the top of the page and a longer demo lower down, plus short feature clips in onboarding emails. Each video has one job and links to the next step.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Making a demo for people who don't yet know the problem
  • Making an explainer so abstract that nobody sees the product
  • Putting a three-minute video above the fold with no text around it

Frequently asked questions

Which one costs more?

It depends on the style. A demo built from screen recordings can be quicker to produce than a fully custom animated explainer, while a polished animated demo may take about as long. Ask for quotes for both.

Can an explainer include screen recordings?

Yes. Many explainers show the interface for the middle section and animation for the intro and conclusion.

Which format works better for SEO?

Neither on its own. The page text, a transcript and structured data matter more. See video SEO for business websites.

Do you make both?

Yes. See my SaaS explainer service and some example projects.
