Quick answer

Use the shortest length that carries your idea: a single idea can be 9 to 30 seconds, while a story or walkthrough may need 60 seconds or more. Hook first, cut every pause that adds nothing, and test two lengths with your own audience.

There's no single best length for a short-form video. The right length is the time your idea needs, and not a second more. Platform rules also change, so check each app's current limits before you plan a series.

Start with the idea, not the number

Write the one thing you want the viewer to take away. If you can say it in one sentence, the video can be short. If it needs a setup, a few steps and a conclusion, it will be longer.

Examples from my own work

My vertical projects range from 9 seconds to just over 2 minutes. A 9-second product teaser is a single idea. A 30-second app explainer covers one problem and one solution. A story-led video about a scam, or a longer ad that walks through an analysis, needs room to build.

Rules that help

  • Hook first. Say or show the most interesting thing in the first few seconds.
  • Cut every pause that doesn't add meaning.
  • Change something regularly: the shot, the text, or the sound, so the video keeps moving.
  • End when you're done. A clear last line works better than a long fade-out.

How to test

Make two versions of a video that carries the same message at different lengths, post both, and compare how long people watch. Your own audience will tell you more than any rule.

A quick length guide by purpose

PurposeOften works at
Teaser or product momentUnder 15 seconds
One idea or tip15 to 45 seconds
App or product explainer30 to 60 seconds
Story or longer ad1 to 2 minutes

These ranges come from the kinds of videos I make, not from a rule. Test your own.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Stretching a video to fit a platform's maximum
  • Cutting so hard that the message is lost
  • Not watching your own retention data

Frequently asked questions

Do longer short-form videos get more reach?

Platforms change their ranking over time. Judge by how long people watch your videos.

Should I post longer versions on YouTube?

Yes, if the idea needs it. A longer cut can live on YouTube while a shorter one goes to Reels and TikTok.

Can I repurpose?

Yes. See repurposing long videos into short clips.

Can you edit my short videos?

Yes. See short-form video editing.

What is the best length for Reels, TikTok and Shorts?

There is no single best length. Keep each video to the time the idea needs, check each platform's current limits, and compare watch time between versions.

Should I cut a long video into several shorts?

Often yes. Pick the strongest self-contained moments and give each a new hook. See how to repurpose a long video.
