Put the video where it supports the main call to action, keep it short, make the first seconds clear without sound, and load it in a way that does not slow the page.
A video can help a landing page convert, or it can bury your message. These practices keep it on your side.
Placement
- Above the fold: works when the product needs explaining. Keep the headline and button visible beside it.
- Below the hero: works when your headline already makes sense and the video is extra proof.
Don't autoplay with sound. Autoplay muted is acceptable if the video is a short loop.
Make it work without sound
Many people watch with the sound off. Add clear captions and make sure the visuals alone tell the main story.
Keep it short
Aim for 45 to 90 seconds. If you have a longer demo, link to it from the page and keep the hero video short.
Use a good thumbnail
Pick a frame that shows the product or a clear benefit. Add a visible play button so people know to click.
Speed matters
Video files are heavy. To avoid slowing the page:
- Host on a video platform and embed it
- Load the player only after the visitor clicks, using a lightweight thumbnail first
- Set the player's size in code so the layout doesn't jump
Support the video with text
Search engines read text, not video. Add a short summary and a transcript or key points under the video so the page ranks and so people who can't watch still get the message.
Measure
Compare conversion with and without the video, and watch where viewers stop. Then adjust the length and the opening.
Need the video itself?
I make landing-page explainers and demos. See the SaaS video service.
A simple layout that works
- A clear headline that says what the product does
- One sentence of support
- A primary button
- The video, with a thumbnail that shows the product
- A short summary or transcript under the video
- Social proof and details further down
The video backs up the headline. It doesn't replace it.
What to measure
- Play rate: how many visitors press play
- Watch time: where people stop watching
- Conversion: sign-ups or demo requests from visitors who watched compared with those who didn't
Treat the numbers as clues, because people who press play are often more interested to begin with. If you can, test the page with and without the video.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Autoplaying sound
- A video that pushes the call to action below the fold on mobile
- An unreadable thumbnail
- No text, so the page has nothing for search engines
Frequently asked questions
Should the video be in the hero?
Put it in the hero when your product needs explaining. If the headline and screenshots already make it clear, put the video just below.
Should I host the video myself?
Hosting on a video platform is simpler and usually faster for visitors. Load the player after a click for the best page speed.
How do I make the page rank?
Add a heading, a summary, a transcript and structured data. See video SEO for business websites.
Can you make a landing page video?
Yes. See SaaS explainer videos and my portfolio.
