Host video on a platform such as YouTube or Vimeo, load the player only when the visitor clicks, use a lightweight thumbnail, add captions and a text summary, and describe the video with VideoObject markup. This keeps pages fast and helps search engines understand the video.
Video is heavy. A page with several auto-loading players can feel slow, which hurts visitors and search.
Use a hosting platform
Do not upload large files to your own server. Host on YouTube or Vimeo and embed. See best video format for web and social.
Load on click
Show a lightweight thumbnail and load the real player only when someone clicks. This cuts page weight a lot.
Set sizes
Give the video a fixed aspect ratio so the layout does not jump while loading.
Add captions and a summary
Captions help accessibility and viewers without sound. A short written summary near the video also helps search engines understand the page.
Add structured data
Mark the video up with VideoObject data and list it in a video sitemap. See video SEO for business websites.
Do not autoplay with sound
Autoplay with sound frustrates visitors. If you autoplay, mute it and keep it short. My portfolio is built this way: each video loads when you tap it.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Uploading large video files to your own server
- Loading several players at once
- Not setting a fixed aspect ratio
