Motion graphics animate design elements like text and shapes to explain or promote. Animation usually tells a story with characters. The terms overlap, so describe what you want to see.
People often use the terms interchangeably. They overlap, but there is a useful difference.
Motion graphics
Motion graphics bring graphic design to life: type, icons, shapes, charts and interfaces. They tend to be informational or promotional and are driven by a voice-over or text. Typical uses: explainers, app promos, data videos, titles, brand intros.
Animation
Animation usually means characters and scenes that tell a story, whether 2D, 3D or stop-motion. Movement and acting carry the message. Typical uses: story-led ads, character explainers, short films.
Where they overlap
Many explainers use both: flat graphics and a few animated characters. A 2D explainer can include character movement and motion-graphic text in the same video.
Why this matters when you hire
The skills and the schedule differ. Character animation is slower and more specialized. Motion graphics can often be faster to produce and easier to update.
How to brief it
Skip the labels and describe the result:
- Who is the audience?
- Do you want characters, or product and text on screen?
- Share two or three reference videos.
Quick guide
| You want | Probably |
|---|---|
| Explain software or data | Motion graphics |
| Show a brand story with characters | Character animation |
| A bit of both | A mixed 2D style |

Examples to make it concrete
- A 45-second video explaining how a payment app works, using interface screens, icons and animated text is motion graphics.
- A 60-second story about a character who struggles with paperwork and discovers a tool is character animation.
- A video that has a character guiding the viewer through animated app screens is a mix.
What changes in production
Character animation needs character design, rigging or frame-by-frame work and acting. Motion graphics need layout, typography and timing. Different skills, and often different people.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Asking for "animation" and expecting a low-cost motion graphics price
- Asking for "motion graphics" and expecting character acting
- Not sharing a reference
Frequently asked questions
Which one is cheaper?
Motion graphics are often quicker to produce, but complexity matters. Get quotes for the style you want.
Which is better for SaaS?
Motion graphics suit software well, because they can show interfaces and ideas clearly.
Can one designer do both?
Some can. Look at the portfolio to see what they actually have made.
What do you make?
Mainly 2D motion graphics, UI animation and explainers. See the portfolio.
