Quick answer

MP4 plays almost everywhere. A transparent format is needed to place a logo over footage. GIF is a lightweight option for email and chat. Ask for the formats that match where you will use it.

A logo animation is only useful if it is in the right file for each place you want to use it.

The common formats

  • MP4. The standard video file. Plays on websites, phones and in most editors. It doesn't support transparency.
  • MOV with transparency. Lets the logo sit over footage or other graphics with no background. Common in video editing. File sizes can be large.
  • WebM with transparency. A web-friendly option for transparent video on websites. Support varies by browser, so test it.
  • GIF. Old but widely supported for email and chat. Limited colors and no sound.
  • Lottie or SVG animation. Light, sharp, scalable animation for websites and apps. These require separate production from a video version.

Where to use what

Video intro or outroMP4, or MOV with transparency if overlaying
Social profile videoMP4
Email signature or chatGIF

What to ask for

  1. The final video in MP4
  2. A transparent version if you will overlay it
  3. A version with and without sound
  4. Sizes for each platform

A vector logo (SVG, AI or EPS) gives the cleanest result. See logo animation: what you get.

A delivery checklist

  • Final video in MP4, with sound
  • A silent version
  • A transparent version for overlays
  • A square or vertical version if you need one
  • A GIF for email or chat, if needed
  • A thumbnail image for your video platform

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using MP4 for an overlay and getting a black or white box around the logo
  • Sending a huge file by email
  • Using a GIF with a gradient and seeing banding
  • Not testing on mobile

Frequently asked questions

Why is my transparent video so large?

Formats that keep transparency usually have larger files. Ask for a version sized for your use.

Can I put the logo animation on a website?

Yes. Use a lightweight format and don't autoplay with sound.

Can I edit the animation later?

Only if you have the project file. Ask before the project starts.

Do you deliver these files?

Yes. See logo animation and tell me where you'll use it.
